How long is a insurance company required to give before they cancel your insurance?
Q. My insurance called me yesterday and informed me that they would be cancelling my insurance because I have rented my house to a group of students. They gave me two weeks to find new insurance before they cut me off. I'm having trouble finding someone who will insure us. If they cut my insurance, my bank will cancel my mortgage, and I guess that means I'd lose the house. Is this insurance company allowed to drop me in this manner. When we got the insurance two months ago there was nobody living in the house, but it was rental insurance. We never lied or anything, we were completely honest through the whole process.

A. most insurance policies range from 30 to 90 days on a cancellation for non payment. You need to stop and read your policy carefully. If this is a home owners policy there is likely an exclusion for using the house as a business. When you bought the insurance you were probably purchased it through an agent. He didnt care what you told him. all he wanted to do was sale the policy. It's the underwriter that now wants to cancel it. Bottom line. I think that you have two options. 1. Purchase a commercial property insurance policy. (expensive but doable.) 2. Search around and find another homeowners insurance policy and buy 1M dollars worth of umbrella coverage. I'd spend my time looking for option two. The minute you ask about an… [cont.]

What types of insurance does an event planner need?
Q. I am interested in starting my own business from home as an event planner (no employees, just me). However, I am unsure about the insurance aspect of things. I will possibly be organising events for a large company and they have told me that I am required to take out Public & Products Liability insurance and Personal Accident cover before I can start working on any of their events. Will the Personal Accident insurance cover my hospital bills if I injure myself? If not, what insurance does? Could you please advise what type of insurance is required for a home-based event planner. If there are any event planners out there could you please let me know what insurance you have?? Thanks!
Asked by eventplanner14 - Wed Sep 26 08:20:29 2007 - - 1 Answers - 3 Comments

A. Call an insurance agent. They will know what insurance you need and how much it will cost. The insurance is to cover the people and items at the events you coordinate, not you personally.

Q. Forced auto insurance, seat belt laws, helmet laws, child safety seats, laws and regulations, all brought upon us by insurance companies who use government regulation to maximize their profits. Isn't it only a matter of time before they get their friends in Washington to make Health Insurance Mandatory? Or is that the republican plan for reform?

What reputable health insurance companies are out there?
Q. My mom doesn't have health insurance and my job doesn't give insurance to family members. I would like to pay monthly to a health insurance company so my mom could get health check up when she needs it. Do you know any health insurance companies that can accept low monthly payments since I don't get paid that much? We live in northern california.
Asked by LOVER - Wed Apr 1 21:05:43 2009 - - 7 Answers - 3 Comments

A. Well, if she's 40 and perfectly healthy, it's going to cost her about $500 a month to have a low/no deductible plan that covers checkups. You BUY it on a month to month basis. If you want low monthly payments, you have to cut the coverage - like take a $10,000 deductible. Or higher. That would cut payments down to maybe $200 a month or less. The older she is, the less healthy she is, the more it costs. Your best bet, is to find a local, independent agent, who can help you balance cost with coverage.

What insurance is needed for casual outside workers?
Q. We live on acreage in Brisbane and need quite a lot of outside work done. Things like brushcutting, weed spraying, gardening, scrub clearing etc We would supply tools and materials etc so the job would suit an unemployed person or a student. What if they are hurt in some way while doing the work? Do we need to take out insurance for them? If so, what type of insurance is it and who should we get it from? I'm pretty sure that normal workers compensation insurance doesn't apply to workers who are employed by householders.
Asked by Ozmaniac - Wed Apr 22 23:21:07 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Try liability insurance or a cafeteria type insurance plan for insuring your casual outside workers or see if your home owners policy would cover it.

What kind of insurance do insurance companies need to buy for their own company?
Q. I want to start an insurance company, but I need to know what kind of insurance I need to purchase for my own company. I have done research and can't find this. (Please do not tell me how to start one, or anything else besides what insurance I need, if any.)
Asked by Twig - Sun Jun 1 00:23:12 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Do you want to start an insurance company or an insurance agency? There is a difference. I'm guessing you want to start an agency because if you had the millions of dollars needed to start an insurance company you'd have the knowledge already or at least the money to hire someone who knew. For an agency you'll need E & O insurance. Also, depending on your situation you'll need a business general liability and property coverage. You'll need business auto or at least a business classification on your auto insurance if you have vehicles. If you hire someone you'll need workman's comp and possibly health insurance, disability, etc. for the employees.

Is the auto-insurance claim information shared if I switch the insurance company?
Q. Hi! I am with auto-insurance company X right now and due to few number of insurance claims that I had made, my insurance is going up. I am wondering if I try to switch to some company Y, will X share my claims information with Y? Thanks!
Asked by Sean P - Thu Jun 19 14:54:23 2008 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Most of the time, yes they will find those prior claims. Many insurance companies participate in a national database that tracks claims. They will also check you MVR records of any tickets or accidents. It is very difficult to slip one past an insurance company. Fraudulently stating fewer claims than you actually have is not a good idea. If you filed another claim and the prior ones were discovered, they could deny the new claim, back charge you a higher rate, and/or cancel the policy on the spot. Because your rate went up due to the claims, it's not a bad idea to shop around, just make sure they are rating you with knowledge of those prior claims.

Also my insurance is AAA. I still haven't gotten my actual ticket in the mail yet, and i was wondering if my insurance bill would be any higher until I'm proven guilty, because i know that if i can take traffic school, it won't get any higher & the point taken off. But i was wondering until then, would it still get higher?

Can you buy auto insurance the very moment you buy a car? Do insurance companies work that quickly?
Q. Can I call an insurance company the instant I buy a car and say, "Hey, I just bought a car. I want to get insurance for it."? I think companies should do this because if I take off from the dealership without insurance, and somebody hits me on the way home, I'm in trouble, right? I looked everywhere for this information, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Could somebody clarify this issue for me?

A. If you buy a car and have a loan on it you are required to have insurance before leaving the car dealership. Most insurance companies have a way to buy on-line or over the phone. Call your local State Farm agent and they can help you. (www.statefarm.com) Good luck.

How can insurance companies not refuse insurance for people with pre existing conditions?
Q. Under Obama's health plan, insurance can't be refused because of a pre existing condition (at least that's what I heard). How would that work? Why would anyone get insurance before getting sick? How would that not bankrupt the companies?
Asked by Nathan - Sat Nov 21 02:19:05 2009 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Only stupid people would buy insurance before they need it. It would bankrupt companies, or more likely, drive prices through the roof. Just like, why would you buy a lottery ticket good for the drawing, BEFORE you know what the numbers are, if you can also buy it AFTER, for those exact numbers?!? This concept is called "adverse selection", and the politicians have been working very hard to ignore it.

Where do car insurance companies get your driving record in CA?
Q. I hit a guys bumper while driving a company car a couple of years ago and I thought he filed a claim but the company took care of it and I never heard about it again. I'm getting car insurance and I pulled my driving record from the DMV and all I have is a seatbelt violation but no accidents. Is there another database somewhere that insurance companies will check or is it just your DMV record? Maybe this all got settled without insurance intervention and I dont' want to pay higher fees if its not necessary. Am I in the clear?
Asked by True2it - Mon Dec 10 16:40:30 2007 - - 6 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Was a citation issued at the time of the accident? If not, it won't show up in the MVD. The insurance industry also has something similar to a credit report, called the CLUE report that lists past property and casualty claims made by you. That is used as well in determining your insurability.

What insurance is needed in Texas to host a non-profit fundraiser?
Q. I am in Galveston, TX and I am looking to host a large outdoor fundraiser for a non-profit organization. What type of insurance will I need to cover the event? Where can I look to find more details and how much does this insurance usually cost? Thanks!
Asked by Phil E - Sun Oct 14 11:54:38 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The non-profit organization should have a general liability policy, if they don't they need to get one. This policy can include events either within the policy or as a rider to the policy. The cost will be highly dependent upon the size of the organization, what they do, where they hold meetings and events, how often they hold meetings and events, and the size of those meetings and events. You can get a policy for as little as $200-$300 per year for small organizations up to over $10,000 for large organizations. You'll want to visit a local independent agent that deals with commercial policies.

How would health insurance businesses be able to stay viable if the Senate bill is passed?
Q. As I understand it, the bill forces all Americans to have health insurance. However, I think that the fine for having no health insurance is around $750. But after the year 2014, health insurance companies will not be able to turn customers away for preexisting conditions. Why wouldnt someone pay the fine or buy low end coverage until they got ill and supplement the coverage or buy an extensive plan?

A. The concept of health insurance was proposed in 1694 by Hugh the Elder Chamberlen from the Peter Chamberlen family. In the late 19th century, "accident insurance" began to be available, which operated much like modern disability insurance. This payment model continued until the start of the 20th century in some jurisdictions (like California), where all laws regulating health insurance actually referred to disability insurance.

How does health insurance work - when insurance premium can generally increase?
Q. If family of two have health insurance, and one of them decide to use it for couple medical procedures will insurance policy premium go up? Please advice. Thanks.
Asked by evelina - Sun Aug 9 14:17:14 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. The premiums will not go up for that. Usually health insurance is up for renewal once a year and the cost increases at that time, but not just because you use your policy. The cost of group health insurance where I work has had double digit increases in the premiums every year for 10 years now. The health insurance companies are out of control. If you have insurance and need health care - go get the care you need. Check out this site to find the best health insurance just in one minute, Here you can get free quotes from different health insurance companies in your area, its the best way to find an afforable health insurance with a reliable company. A. You will need a few types of insurance. General Liability, Commercial Auto and workman's compensation if you plan on having any employees. General Liability - This protects third parties if you are negligent and cause harm to a person or property. (Does not cover accidents that happen while behind the wheel) Commercial Auto - This is just like personal auto insurance but for vehicles used commercially. Workers Compensation - This covers your employees in case of an accident either in or out of the vehicle. I bet the general liabilty and workers compensation will put you back about $1,200 per year. The autos, figure anywhere between $1,500 and $2,500 each. There is no way to get a price without talking to an insurance broker.

How exactly does insurance affect our economy?
Q. I understand the basics of insurance. That is the transfer of risk. That insurance companies bet on getting more in premiums than they have to pay out in claims. Please if you could give me some answers regarding this or point me to a site where I can find more information it would be great.
