Q. Or do you prefer to have them managed by HMO's and health insurance companies in some other city far from where you live? That is, of course, if you are lucky enough to have health insurance at all.

A. Don, I don't see a large difference between the choices given. Managed health care is a failure in my opinion. I had an uncle who was having stomach pains, his HMO treated him for ulcers, but he was not getting any relief, it was not until he went outside of the HMO on his own for a second opinion that he discovered he had pancreatic cancer. After dealing with the HMO for so long, his cancer when discovered was beyond treatment, and he died a painful death. I told this story to get to this point, HMOs, and insurance companies are in business which means they need to make money. It is difficult to believe that the welfare of the patient will be placed first when it competes with profit. I am not sure what the right method is for this… [cont.]
